I chose this firm after twelve days of calling attorneys, based on a call with Oscar, a senior business partner, who made strong assurances about urgency, availability, and understanding the pressure my business was under. He quoted $550/hour with a $5,000 retainer, which I paid.
Once the retainer was paid, Oscar disappeared and my case was handed to a much less experienced associate at a lower rate. The difference in experience was immediately apparent. I had to repeatedly re-explain the situation and the plan, despite being told they would “move quickly” and “dive right into the contract.” Contract analysis was never the plan — negotiation was — yet I was charged extra for “expedited” service while the associate spent days redoing work I had already completed.
Communication slowed significantly, time-sensitive documents arrived too late to be useful, and billing raised serious concerns. Even more so considering NOTHING was accomplished that I hadn’t already agreed on. In fact it only became a worse deal as Jennifer kept negotiating with people that have made it clear that they don’t negotiate
In short, my retainer was effectively flushed. The promises that led me to choose this firm were not followed through once payment was made. Oscar was responsive and compassionate before the retainer, and unavailable afterward — and when finally reached, minimized the delays despite those delays being the very reason I chose the firm.
This isn’t about gender or personality — my daughter is headed to law school. This is about experience, efficiency, transparency, and accountability. A law firm is a business, and once the retainer is paid, they control the ledger. Questioning the work or billing only seems to result in more charges.
If you’re considering this firm, read the negative reviews carefully and trust your gut. Keep interviewing. Make sure the person selling you the work is actually the person doing it — especially when time and money are critical.
I hope this helps someone avoid the position I was put in.
